Source : Yahoo AnswersQuestion : Why was the discovery of LSD a surprise?

People have lived around psychedelic mushrooms for centuries. They’re literally everywhere too. How could western medicine not know about their effects till the 20th century?
I know LSD was a new chemical. Its just that everything I read makes it seem like chemicals that have that effect weren’t known about.
It just seems weird that no one was really aware of something that’s so common.

In the first place, Albert Hoffman made LSD from purple ergot fungus, so yes he was aware of the psychoactive properties of some plants.

It was a surprise because he discovered the effects of LSD accidentally. These effects are quite distinct from natural psychedelics.

He experienced something that no one else in the world had, and wasn’t even expecting it. I’d say that was one heck of a surprise, wouldn’t you!?

Psilocybin mushrooms and mescaline containing cactus are part of a group of mind altering substances, known as Entheogens. An entheogen is a compound that allows a person to conect with the “Divine Within” and these substances are used to produce trancendant, spiritual experiences. Because of this, their use was condemned and opposed by the Christian’s who invaded the American continent. As such, they never became mainstream, remaining known only to various tribal sharmans and mystics, who tended to guard their secrets for obvious reasons.

Mescaline first emerged onto the scene in the late 1800s, but while it caused considerable interest, never became mainstream. Entheogenic mushrooms didn’t really enter western awareness until the 1950s, several years after the discovery of LSD.

The surprise with LSD was twofold. Firstly, was the power of the drug. It’s threshold dose is over a thousand times less than nearly every other mind altering substance, requiring only 25 millionths of a gram to notice an effect (compare with Mescaline at 100 mg). Secondly, while Hoffman was familiar with the psychotropic effects of ergot, he had no reason to suspect that the fungus would contain anything that would produce this kind of reaction. Indeed, he synthesised a range of LSD compounds, all with very similar chemical structures, and only the one known as LSD-25 has the sort of psychadellic effects that Hoffman experienced.

His initial experience occurred when he accidently contaminated himself with some of the substance. He then took a deliberate dose the next day, aiming to take an ammount that would be almost guaranteed to not have an effect. Instead, he took 250 millionths of a gram, and had quite a trip!!

After this, it took another 20 years for LSD to enter into popular culture (through Timothy Leary’s unfortunate intervention), although in the meantime it was widely used by a variety of intellectuals and researchers in investigations into different aspects of psychology.

Psychoactives like psilocybin mushrooms and mescaline have been known to man for almost as long as they have existed. Many cultures have used them for things like spiritual ceremonies, including almost every Native American tribe that ever lived near them. Pick an Indian tribe, study their spiritual beliefs, and you will find evidence of psychedelic drug use beyond a fraction of a doubt. LSD is synthetically produced, but occurs naturally in a certain type of mold that forms on rye bread. Few people know that LSD was actually a commonly used substance even 500 years ago, albeit accidentally. In the middle ages in Europe, rye was the most common form of bread eaten, but their methods of producing it were so unrefined that it was often molded by the time anyone got to it. People would actually trip from eating bread, but of course they didn’t understand the exact cause of it.

A professor of mine enlightened me to this. He described several texts from those times in which people recorded very strange experiences. One man, while on some sort of pilgrimage, wrote something to the effect of: “Scraped my leg on a bush today and it fell off. There was no blood, but the pain was immense. [next day] Miraculously, my leg has reattached itself. I wonder if it was only a dream, or if I was put under some sort of sorcery.” Obviously that isn’t a direct quote, that is my recollection of someone else’s recollection of the text, so don’t hold me word for word on that.

After discovering this, and then reading whatever else I could find about it, I wonder if ergot wasn’t the cause for much of the magical tales that seem to originate from around this time. Wizards, witches, dragons, elfs, spells… or just a bunch of people tripping all the time? I don’t hold any of this as distinctive evidence in any fashion, but it does bring up some interesting questions.

The Heyókȟa symbolize and portray many aspects of the sacred, the Wakȟáŋ. Their satire presents important questions by fooling around. They ask difficult questions, and say things others are too afraid to say. By reading between the lines, the audience is able to think about things not usually thought about, or to look at things in a different way.

Principally, the Heyókȟa functions both as a mirror and a teacher, using extreme behaviors to mirror others, thereby forcing them to examine their own doubts, fears, hatreds, and weaknesses. Heyókȟas also have the power to heal emotional pain; such power comes from the experience of shame—they sing of shameful events in their lives, beg for food, and live as clowns. They provoke laughter in distressing situations of despair and provoke fear and chaos when people feel complacent and overly secure, to keep them from taking themselves too seriously or believing they are more powerful than they are.
